Modern Electric Fireplaces - The Pros & Cons
If you are a fan of wood stoves, but live in a place where a traditional wooden stove doesn't work for you, than a modern electric fireplace, such as a Dimplex, may be the decision that makes the most sense for you. Here are a few things to think about before deciding to buy one.
Pros: If you live in a house with no chimney, an apartment, or a condominium, and you don't want to spend thousands of dollars to have one put in your home, than a traditional chimney simply won't work for you. If, in addition to this, you have no gas line, than a gas fireplace is not an option either. Electric fireplaces can be built to look antique, with screens and glass doors, so that they are almost indistinguishable from traditional wood burning fireplaces until you look closely. They are portable, and don't require a vent, unlike either of the other options, so that you can move them between rooms whenever you want to reorganize. All they really need in order to be installed is to plug them in, so there are no over the top installation costs, just the cost of the unit itself
Cons: They are no more energy efficient than electrical heaters, even though they cost quite a bit more. They are not useful for saving on your electricity bill when it comes to heating up your home. Electricity itself tends to be a more expensive way to heat your home than natural gas. Of course an electric fireplace does provide a bit more atmosphere that an electric heater does. Electric units do not add to the value of your home the way that a permanently installed one would. In fact telling potential buyers that an electric fireplace is in the home will not persuade them to buy it. In addition, the flames provided by electric fireplaces do not look very realistic in comparison to the real thing. Even a gas unit has a much more realistic flame.
In the end, the decision of whether or not to buy a modern electric fireplace is entirely yours. If you need something portable, easy to install, and flexible enough for your needs, it may be the right decision for you. But if you're looking to save up on energy costs, something to add to the value of your home, or the experience of sitting down next to a genuine fire on a cold winter day, than you will want to consider other options. |
