Fireplace Blower Inserts Dramatically Increase Your Fire's Efficiency

A standard wood-burning fireplace is cozy to sit next to on a cold winter day. However, the fireplace only provides heat within a certain range. Outside that particular room, it is ineffective at heating. A fireplace blower insert solves this problem by sending much of the heat generated by the fire into the air where it can be blown into other rooms.

A blower insert consists of two parts: a heat exchanger and a blower. The heat exchanger is simply a stamped sheet metal duct or series of tubes which is designed to fit into a fireplace. This duct is shaped so that when a fire is built in the fireplace, the fire sits on top of and is contained on three sides by the duct. Connected to the duct and built into the mantle is a blower. The blower blows room-temperature air into the duct where it is heated strongly by the fire. The air then exits vents built into the top or sides of the fireplace unit, essentially turning a standard fireplace into a furnace.

It is advantageous to have this system because it essentially transfers heat that would normally be lost up the chimney to air in the room. These units are available in all sizes to fit most fireplaces and are designed to fit many different design needs. Available in both modern and classical styling, fireplace inserts include brass and stainless steel components as well as faux brick and fieldstone. The use of a fireplace insert not only reduces heating bills but adds to the decor of the room.

To save even more money on heating, many fireplace inserts are installed in bedrooms. Using this method, the whole bedroom can be kept warm and cozy throughout the night while the remainder of the house can be left to cool off, dramatically reducing energy waste in unused rooms. Compared to equivalent solutions such as wood stoves or electric space heaters, a fireplace insert is cheap to operate with an adequate supply of wood, looks better than a real wood stove, and is more efficient than an electric heater.

In summary, a fireplace blower insert is an elegant way to reduce heating bills, remodel a fireplace, and safely enjoy a warm house during cold weather.
