Freestanding Wood Burning Fireplaces - Elegant & Cost Effective
A freestanding wood-burning fireplace is an elegant and cost-effective heating solution. As the name suggests, these fixtures burn wood to provide heat for a room. Faux wood stoves which use electricity to provide safer heat are also common. These electric models are also more convenient than real wood stoves because they are often portable.
The most common real wood-burning stove is made of cast iron. Cast iron conducts heat fairly well and will retain a great deal of heat even after the stove has been extinguished. Cast iron also makes these units almost indestructible. In fact, many which were built in the 1800's are still in working order today. These stoves can be set up to heat more than one room of a house through the use of a special pipe. The stove is where the wood burns and generates hot exhaust. This exhaust may be run into other rooms through a pipe to provide heat a great distance from the source. Some wood burning stoves feature a cook top which is useful in combination with pots and kettles for cooking. As opposed to a range, a wood burning stove can be located in a sitting room and provide cozy heat as well as a place for a kettle with which to brew coffee or tea.
Electrical models of wood-burning stoves have a few benefits over their wood burning counterparts. They require no wood, which can be good if wood is unavailable or expensive. They also require little maintenance because no ash needs to be cleaned out of them and no kindling or bellows are needed to help get them going. Electrical models are often reasonably portable depending on their size, which works well in a home where remodeling is frequent. Furthermore, most electrical models do not get hot on the outside and are safe for children to be around. A real freestanding wood-burning fireplace is dangerous on all sides when heated and is very unsuitable for use in a room frequently occupied by children. The hot exterior of a real wood stove is also a fire hazard if curtains, blankets, or clothing are kept close by. However, these stoves are often built on a brick platform in the center of a room to reduce this hazard.

In summary, a real freestanding wood-burning fireplace can heat many rooms in a house very cheaply while an electrical model is more portable and suitable for children. |
